CI quash Quins
Conditions were perfect at Belmont as CI welcomed Belfast Harlequins 2’s for this Conference game with a number of new starts and changes in the home line up.
The match turned out to be a one sided affair in the late summer sunshine, but an entertaining one none the less.
CI started brightly, moving the ball well and finding early in-roads into the Quins defence.
There were breaks aplenty from centers Heron and Irvine with Irvine claiming a first half hatrick. Outhalf McKinney was marshaling activities well and a number of quality scores where added as CI delivered expertly on the game plan.
CI continued to add the points almost at will and stormed to a 47-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was a patchier affair as can often be the case. CI did add further points through a strong barreling finish for skipper Mark McConkey and a close range overlap on the narrow side involving Woods and Fergusson.
The game was called up about 10 minutes early at 61-0 as Will Heron required medical attention. It took some time for an early responder and then full ambulance to come and take Willy to hospital.
A diagnosis of a bruised kidney and some bleeding perhaps the lesser of the potential outcomes and we wish him well in his recovery.
A dominant performance from CI but the coaches will be encouraged by the performance of new starts such as man of the match, hooker Scott McNarry and the way that the team continued to push for quality phases.
Another conference games next week awaits against Banbridge.
