Coleraine RFC V CIYMS RFC Saturday 30th Dec 2017

CI visited Coleraine on a dry but bitterly cold year end Saturday.
As usual the hospitality off the pitch was superb.
Both sides needed the points in the very competitive mid table of Q1.
Coleraine started strongly, buoyed by some strong home support. They dominated possession during the half, with a strong lineout and decent scrum, They carried well and made numerous half breaks..
8 and 13 carrying well.
However they failed to break the CI line in a meaningful way.
The pressure did lead to penalty opportunities, and they took 2 from 3, missing the 3rd from almost in front of the posts.
Towards the end of the half CI made a break from deep. Overlap.
Moving into the opponents half the killer pass went a little behind Craig Devlin who was clear. Chance gone.
CI stayed in the opponents half for the remainder of the first half and on the whistle got a penalty in front of the posts. Kilgore slotted it over.
HT 6..3
CI felt fortunate to be within 3 points.
Whatever coaches Gareth Fry and Darren Barbour said at half time certainly changed things..
The scrum, which had been even, edged in CI’s favour. The lineout too.
CI started moving the ball and stretching the home defence.
Midway through the half a deft move, with McConkey to the fore, split the Coleraine defence open and this time flying winger, Craig Devlin, scored at the posts.
Kilgore converted.
CI began to find form and pressure lead to another penalty. The attempt just drifted wide.
From a penalty in mid field CI kicked into the opponents red zone. From the lineout they moved the ball through a few phases,
Skipper Calum Irvine beat his man and another to crash over. The conversion was missed. The home crowd went quiet.
The last 15 minutes saw Coleraine throw everything at CI. Their ball retention was excellent but the CI defence was superb.
In the last minute, after numerous phases, they crashed over in the corner for a try and a deserved bonus point. Con. missed.
A tough and uncompromising match. Coleraine carried hard but lacked a cutting edge. CI had that and it eventually won the day.
